  1. The most surprising thing I saw in the demographics is the amount of students Lamar has. There are almost 15,000 students, but it feels like there are only about 8,000. I think that a lot of the students take online classes. That would be something that might be interesting to include with admissions. It would be cool to show that Lamar also offers online classes.
Another interesting thing was that the Arts and Sciences were the most popular degrees. I never thought of Lamar as an art school. I have always thought of it as primarily an engineering school. It is cool to see that we focus so much on art and science. I think that needs to be used more in the marketing.
Hope you guys are all staying dry and safe!

  2. Looking at all of this information does and doesn’t surprise me. I am not surprised that the white and African American population is about the same.Thats more of something that makes me happy. I am more shocked of how little there is of other races compared to the white/African American. Also I am surprised to see the large sum of freshmen students start with a science/arts degree. Also that 3400 out of 4200 students who are going for masters, are for education. That also makes me really happy because I love to see teachers that care about their education and want to be better. (106) Also, I am very pleased to see that the acceptance rate is 84%. I know that many people don’t even apply to college because of the fear of not being good enough and with Lamar accepting so many I believe it really gives some hope to future students that they can succeed.

  3. What surprised me in the data is how many people attend lamar university and major in the Arts and Science department. Also the age groups, people who are between the ages of 18-24 are in college more than people you are between the ages 25-49. Another thing was that the further I went back when examining the graphs the more I saw how less and less people attended lamar for Fine Arts and Communications. I also noticed that more females applied to lamar than males, but the percentage of those that were admitted and who were admitted and enrolled were higher than the females.

  4. Looking through this data, I was surprised to see that only 12% and 9% of full-time, first time students who began in fall of 2010 and fall 2012 respectively, graduated within 4 years. I was also surprised to see that of the 5,486 applicants for fall of 2018, 32% enrolled. I’m not sure how these numbers compare to other universities, but I am sure Lamar would like to see it higher either way. Students aged 30-49 account for 479 out of 6,456 students (about 7%). Older students will always be a minority in a traditional college-age population, but there is a lot of opportunity for recruitment among potential returning students of this age group. Parents whose children are older and more self-sufficient or working adults looking to make a career change after spending some time in the workforce are ideal candidates.

  5. I was really surprised to see that women outnumbered men by so much at Lamar. I guess I always perceived the numbers to be more equal in observation. This makes me wonder why there aren’t more prominent women’s groups available or promoted around the university. College can be a place of sexual assault and violence against women in many cases unfortunately. I think if these numbers were more widely known and less exclusionary groups with low barriers of entry were formed to allow safety and camaraderie for female students, the university would be an all-around better and safer place.

  6. The first thing that caught my eye was the amount of international students that attend Lamar University. It is crazy that the amount of out of state students is only about five hundred more than international students. I would have thought the out of state students would surpass international students by a long shot. The second thing that really stood out to me was how many business majors we have on campus. I initially though the business and engineering departments were the largest. After viewing the student demographics, I was able to see actually how large our art and science department is along with the education department. Lastly, I am shocked to see how large of a gap there is between gender. I know that most men go straight to work or work in a trade professional, but I never would have thought there would be this big of a difference. After seeing these statistics, I am able to gain a little more perspective on the student body here at Lamar University. I believe this exercise will help me in the long run while working on this project.

  8. I was really surprised by the sheer amount that women outweigh men at our university. Not only that, but the fact that there were five cases of rape reported on campus, four of which took place in the dorms, and two cases of fondling in 2016 alone. That number is scary to me, a fellow female student. I want to believe our campus is safe and I know that security is better since 2016, which I’m thankful for.

On a completely different note, I was also surprised by the number of students in each college. It was interesting to see that the college of education had the least number of undergraduate students but the most number of returning graduate students. I thought that was pretty cool. Also, the fact that over four thousand of the students on campus are pursuing a master’s degree currently was interesting, too! I Never would have guessed we had so many graduate students here at Lamar.

  9. These demographics were super interesting and looking at them opened my eyes about Lamar. The amount of commuters that go here is astounding. Whenever I walk on campus I feel like I see the same people every day. It’s a lot of people but never enough to make me feel crowded. I felt like I was surrounded by more people in my high school than I am here. That could be just mean that my classes are in times during the day when campus isn’t as busy but when the demographics said that 15,000 people go here, I was shocked.
Something else that stood out to me was the male to female ratio. It never really got my attention how many girls I would see on campus but the demographics are clear and surprising. Not only is there more women than men, but the amount of women is far larger than the men. Almost doubling the amount to be exact. I showed the information to my roommates and they were both shocked as well.

  10. What surprised me the most about the demographic chart was that the amount of out of state students has slowly been increasing over the last few years, in 2012 only 522 of the students were out of state, fall of 2018 we have 960. this is surprising giving the fact that we have 13,367 in state students attending Lamar University. understanding that out of state tuition is more expensive, i would like to know what are some other reasons that students decide not to come to Lamar, a lack of resources? a lack of valid information?

  11. What really surprises me about this data is just how few people there are in Comm, or in comm related degrees. But there are plenty of other big surprises. Like the fact that some of the students here aren’t even 18 yet, that there are incredibly few, but still a good handful of elders enrolled, the fact that more girls than boys are enrolled, how much bigger the pool of students are when you go from the freshmen to the sophomores in art and science, how many people are doing this part time, and the fact that the ethnic category goes from White first, which is no surprise, Black or African next, and then Hispanic. I expected Hispanic would’ve been the second largest demographic, considering how far south we are. And it is really close, but it’s still surprising.

Oh, and this isn’t really relevant, but the teeny smiley face at the bottom of this page was very pleasantly surprising.

  12. What surprises me the most about the demographics of Lamar University is that more caucasian students attend the school than there are Hispanic and African American students. Although, when you visit the campus, it tells a different story. And as fas as the male and female ratio, the female demographics beat the males by 4,000 students. Lamar University is known for a lot of programs such as Sign Language, Communications, Engineering and Speech and Hearing. But from what I see it is mainly Arts and Sciences which is kind of a huge let down for all of the other programs that are not in the spotlight. Lastly, more ethnicities attend the school than Lamar let on. We have about every culture there is that goes to the school full-time or part-time and that is awesome.

  13. One thing that surprised me about Lamar University is the location. Beaumont, Texas. Beaumont, Texas is one of the most crime impacted cities in the united states. On the positive side, i found out a lot of information didn’t know. For instance, the are 4,150 more females attending Lamar university than males attending Lamar University and of those 5,315 males attending Lamar 51 of the graduated with the communications degree. So this brings me more motivation to finish strong and graduate.

  14. I’ve looked at these statistics before — I didn’t realize how small the Communications department is. Also, it surprised me how many more women attend Lamar than men. I guess I never noticed it before. Also the 22-24, 25-29 age ranges are very comparable to the 18-21 age range which goes to show that not only are people coming back to school, but that it often takes longer than the “typical” four years to complete a college degree.
